With the Israel-Hamas war in its 13th day, the humanitarian situation in Gaza is “catastrophic”, the WHO said. China has called for a ceasefire, while Israel continues to exchange fire with Hizbollah over the Lebanese border. Here’s the latest at 2pm, London time:
At least 3,478 people have been killed and 12,065 have been injured in Gaza since Israeli air strikes began nearly two weeks ago, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
At least 1,400 Israelis have been killed and thousands wounded in that time, according to Israeli authorities.
Chinese president Xi Jinping called for a ceasefire and humanitarian corridors for Gaza.
UN secretary-general António Guterres has arrived in Egypt.
The Israeli army said it continued to strike targets in Gaza and in Lebanon.
The US advised citizens against travel to Lebanon and authorised the departure of non-essential staff from its embassy in Beirut, amid ratcheting tensions.
A breakthrough in talks for aid to get to Gaza was mediated by US president Joe Biden on Wednesday, with the Rafah crossing expected to open on Friday to 20 trucks loaded with food and water.
But the World Health Organization said this was a “very, very small start” compared with what the Strip needs, or about 100 trucks a day.
More than 600 Turkish, Northern Cypriot and Palestinian individuals have requested evacuation from Gaza, Turkey said.
UK prime minister Rishi Sunak, on a visit to Israel, told his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu that Britain “wants you to win” in the conflict against Hamas.
Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, said his country faces “a coalition of evil” led by Tehran and that its defeat is in the interests of “all the nations of Europe”.
Sunak pushed for “further progress” in delivering urgent food, water and medical supplies to Gaza.
UK security minister Tom Tugendhat said Hamas has made it clear that its purpose is the “murder of the Jewish people”.
Rocket sirens continued to sound across Israel.
Israel strikes West Bank city of Tulkarem

The Israeli military carried out a rare air strike in the West Bank city of Tulkarem on Thursday, as police came under attack during an attempted arrest of Palestinians.
Several Israeli policemen were injured, one seriously, by an improvised explosive device, authorities said. Ten Palestinians were arrested in a sweeping security operation as Israel seeks to tamp down on supporters of Hamas in the occupied territory.
Sixty-one Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, some by armed settlers, since the beginning of the hostilities with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, according to UN figures.
